Steve Homer's Photography

I'm a fine-art photographer in Santa Cruz, California. I make photographs to exhibit in galleries and other public places, rather than to sell to magazines or clients.

My usual subject matter is the female body, clothed and unclothed. I see my figurative work as more akin to "portraiture of naked people" than to classical figure photography or erotic/glamour photography. I have a particular fascination with the androgynous body and with people who present themselves to the world in a gender-ambiguous way. Photography is my way of exploring and commenting about gender politics. I've been doing this sort of photography since 1990.

A lot of the people I photograph are exploring gender identity or body image issues, and I enjoy facilitating that process. Many of my models have tattoos or body piercings, and many are lesbians, but those are certainly not requirements!

I work exclusively in black-and-white, using conventional and infrared films. I do all my film processing and printing in a traditional "wet" paper-and-chemical darkroom.

Models Wanted
I’m always looking for women and couples to photograph. You must be 18 or older. I give models prints in exchange for their time. I’m looking for models of all shapes and sizes, but I am especially interested in photographing women with androgynous styles or small figures. Please read my FAQ and send me an email if you’re interested.
